Manicomio (Madhouse) Di R is a huge asylum in Italy that has been abandoned for over 30 years. Originally built in 1871 the hospital was later a military college.
Electroshock therapy was used a lot in this asylum, along with other experimental operations on the human nervous system to try and treat the mentally ill.
This was definitely the highlight of an amazing road trip around Italy and Switzerland.
We arrived here in the early hours while it was still pitch black and very foggy. After navigating our way through the fog, tiny holes in fences, basements and tunnels, we finally made it into the main block.
This place was a maze of naturally decayed corridors, operation rooms and offices, with some old equipment and paperwork just left to be reclaimed by nature. It certainly didn’t disappoint.
